Managing Editor at The Aspen Times

The managing editor is the second chair in the newsroom at The Aspen Times. The role consists of a mixture of editorial leadership, reporting, editing and coaching. The managing editor handles editor duties for the entire editorial department for the two days the editor is off.

Leadership role
The managing editor will coordinate with the editor on developing and ensuring the implementation of weekly story plans via staff meetings and in one-on-one meetings, and ensuring standards are met by the editorial staff.

Coaching role
The managing editor will help to develop talent and provide input to help reporters and staffers to continually learn and evolve. The emphasis is on improving the quality of each section and our digital/social platforms day-to-day, week-to-week by providing feedback on stories, helping to develop reporting instincts and sources, and line/copy editing. This feedback loop is essential to keeping staffers informed on progress and setting up the team for success.

Backup role
The AME will work to ensure the paper doesn’t skip a beat, including handling editing duties, when the editor is off or out on PTO.

The AME can be expected to produce quality content, bolstering The Aspen Times’ mix of original reporting and content. This includes filling in on reporting/editing duties when staffers are out, taking a beat when needed and, when the schedule allows, generating in-depth stories.

Key Responsibilities:
• Work with editor as a writing coach, reporting coach and resource person for the newsroom and a mentor to team members.
• Work with editor to ensure all deadlines are met and the content plan supporting the content strategy is properly executed.
• Work with editor to ensure each edition of the newspaper and ensuring content is generated daily to fulfill expectations for print and digital.
• Copyediting.
• Involved in community & cultivates relationships with community members.
• Research, write and report compelling journalism that maintains our existing audience and attracts new readers.
• Research beats and develop story ideas for print, social media, and news websites.
• Attend staff meetings and communicates routinely with editors, designers and peers within the organization.
• Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Experience / Qualifications:
• College degree and/or equivalent experience.
• Excellent communication and listening skills, both written and verbal.
• Strong computer/digital skills with understanding of various platforms and mastery over all computer/digital programs and software utilized in production of the newspaper.
• Knowledge of the newspaper industry, including digital and web
• Demonstrated organizational skills.
• Working knowledge of Associated Press style and an understanding of the daily newspaper environment.
• Strong interest in news and the community.
• Willingness to relocate to the community if not already a resident.

Salary $75K-$85K based upon experience! Competitive benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance after 60 days of employment, $500 Recreation Bonus after 6 months and 401k Plan after 1 year.
