Public Works Motor Pool/Heavy Equipment Mechanic $32.81 - $43.28/hour 

Under direction, performs skilled duties to maintain and repair a wide variety of light duty, medium duty, heavy equipment, trucks and other equipment; orders and stocks parts and supplies; works with vendors to identify parts and compare pricing; maintains accurate records of maintenance and repairs; and performs other related duties as required.

Education and Experience
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.

Four years of progressively responsible experience maintaining and repairing heavy trucks, heavy equipment, automotive vehicles, and other mechanized equipment.

Vocational training/education may substitute for the above-required experience on a year for year basis to a maximum of two years.

The duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not prevent the assignment of work that is appropriately related to this class.
• Performs skilled duties to maintain and repair a wide variety of light duty, medium duty, heavy trailer, truck and other equipment, both in the shop and in the field as necessary.
• Performs diagnostics, major and minor repairs and general maintenance on gas hybrid, gasoline and diesel engines and major drive train components including transmissions, differentials and drive units.
• Performs diagnostics, major and minor repairs on emissions systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, electrical circuits, air conditioning systems, air systems, and hydraulic systems.
• Performs major and minor services using appropriate technical information as outlined by the manufacturer.

• Schedules preventive and periodic maintenance and repairs in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
• Performs general metal fabrication and welding using gas torch, arc and/or MIG welders; fabricates and repairs parts, equipment and tools.
• Orders and stocks parts to maintain a required inventory; works with outside vendors to identify appropriate parts and obtain pricing information.
• Maintains necessary records of all work performed using a computerized fleet management system.
• At times, performs the same duties as a Heavy Equipment Operator.
• Tracks and maintains expenditures within established budgets; forecasts the need and costs of equipment replacements and/or major repairs for budgeting purposes.
• May perform service at field sites where equipment is being operated; drives a service truck to the site; stocks the truck with necessary parts, tools, and equipment.
• Provides training and guidance to less experienced employees as assigned.
• May operate equipment and drive vehicles to perform construction and maintenance work as required.
• Uses a computer to maintain files and records, prepare correspondence, research information, and prepare various documents and reports.
• Takes weekend on-call winter maintenance shifts.
• Assists Operators, Heavy Equipment Mechanic and Motor Pool Mechanic on repairs and services.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.


Licenses and Certificates:
• Depending on assignment, a valid Colorado Class A commercial driver’s license, with air brake endorsement and a safe driving record may be required at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
• Depending on assignment, may be required to obtain Underground Storage Tank (UST), hazardous material/response, or other certificates required by law within six months of appointment.

Special Requirements:
• Required to possess hand tools necessary to perform most duties identified above.
• Must have cell phone or equivalent means of contact for on-call shifts.
• Current First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
• Must pass a DOT physical examination to be granted a Commercial Driver’s License.
