The Craig Press and Steamboat Pilot & Today are in need of a versatile journalist who can handle planning and feature writing for a variety of special publications as well as news reporting. This will be a new role with many opportunities for a journalist who comes with a variety of abilities and passions.
This position will be shared between two newspapers in adjacent counties — Routt and Moffat — in beautiful Northwest Colorado. The role will be full-time with benefits, and involves splitting duties between special publications and arts and entertainment reporting for Steamboat Springs and news reporting in Craig. The position will be based out of our Craig offices.
Craig is a small and friendly rural community that is truly off the beaten path. The city is surrounded by public land where there are endless opportunities for camping, hiking, biking and more. Moffat County comes stocked with adventure for anyone who loves the outdoors. Much of our wilderness is situated in a high desert landscape, setting a perfect stage for off-roading and exploring. The Yampa River runs through Craig and Moffat County, offering opportunities for river rafting, paddleboarding, fishing and swimming in the spring and summer. During the winter Craig is well known for snowshoeing, cross country skiing and hunting.
Steamboat Springs is a storied city at the base of a world-class ski resort. Nestled along the Western Slope of the Colorado Rockies with the Yampa River cutting through downtown, Steamboat sits at 6,700 feet elevation and features some of the best opportunities in North America for hiking, mountain biking, camping, kayaking, rafting, tubing, skiing and snowboarding. Steamboat Springs is also home to Howelsen Hill ski area, the oldest continuously operating ski area in North America, and world-famous geothermal hot springs, among many other local features.
At the Craig Press and Steamboat Pilot, we value integrity, teamwork and a commitment to the community, in addition to being able to handle the many pressures of a daily newspaper. Applicants should have a degree in journalism or an applicable field and/or pertinent work experience. A detailed knowledge of AP style and news writing is a must. Candidates must also possess a valid driver’s license and have their own transportation. This position will require working weekends and some nights. Experience with photography is a big plus.
