Shelter Outreach Services of Ohio is a 501©3 organization that provides medical and surgical services to the dogs at The Franklin County Dog Shelter in addition to our HQHVSN and wellness clinic on the East side of Columbus. We are currently looking for a part time veterinarian to work in the medical department at the shelter. If qualified applicants are interested in working full time, or in both medical AND surgery, this can be accommodated.
We expect our veterinarians to provide the highest quality of care for the shelter dogs, just as you would for owned pets in a private practice setting. The facility is equipped with digital radiology, two surgery suites, dental equipment, two exam rooms, a doctor's office, and an ICU ward for critical patients that has IV pumps, nebulizers, and other necessary equipment. We have the ability to send diagnostics to IDEXX or other labs as needed. Dogs requiring off site care such as orthopedics are treated through a non-profit arm of the shelter. We frequently see emergencies such as trauma cases (HBC, gunshot wounds, animal attacks), toxicities, heat stroke, parvovirus and other critical contagious illnesses, and expect these to be addressed as part of the daily duties.
A typical day at the shelter begins with a walk through to visualize the anywhere from 150-250 dogs on site. After walk through is complete, recheck exams are done for follow up care on medical cases, or on anything that came in the night before on emergency. Once the medical caseload is complete, intake exams are performed on new arrivals. Surgery is performed 3-4 days a week, generally Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Fri, and animals requiring emergency surgery can be done at that time. The medical veterinarian will work with the scheduled surgeon to make a plan for these cases. Foster dogs come in throughout the day on scheduled appointments.
Medical shifts at the shelter generally run from 9a-5pm Mon-Sunday. Hours can be adjusted to fit your schedule, as long as an 8 hour shift can be provided, i.e. 7a-3pm, 8a-4pm, 10a-6pm would be alternative options.
Interested applicants should submit a resume along with what days/hours you are available to work.
