GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

Unification Specialist Case Managers are responsible for coordinating family reunification services and assessing the needs of each unaccompanied child (UC) in care.

ABOUT YOU

You should like working with children of all ages. Should be able to multi-task, be detail-oriented, be organized, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. You see this role as a way to help kids needing support. You should be motivated and compassionate.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Utilize trauma theory and brief therapeutic techniques to work with unaccompanied children entering the United States during a typical shelter stay of 30-35 days.
  • Complete an intake interview upon admission and promptly identify needed services.
  • Assess family, education, history of trauma, personal goals, and potential experience with human exploitation/trafficking.
  • Develop interventions and an individual service plan consistent with each child's psycho-social needs.
  • Maintain direct contact with each UC and, to the extent possible, with the UCs family and potential sponsors.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation according to program regulations.
  • Carry up to eight cases.
  • Upon request, this role may be required to travel with UC, 14 and under, to locations in the United States.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Confirm minor are receiving all required services, meeting regularly with the minor to ensure their wellbeing.
  • Attend all case staffing, trainings, and other meetings as part of the minor’s care team, providing status updates and collaborating with other stakeholders.
  • Initiate, coordinate, and maintain direct contact with each minor and the minor’s family while the minor is in ORR care in order to efficiently advance the minor’s family reunification and safe release from the facility.
  • Facilitate the timely release or discharge of minors to identified family members or authorized caregivers/custodian and document the provision of services in each minor’s case file

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE and/or REQUIREMENTS TO BE CONSIDERED

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or an equivalent degree in Psychology, Sociology, or other relevant Behavioral Science
  • Experience: 2 or more years of related experience
  • ORR experience preferred.
  • Available to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends
  • Available to travel, as required.

  • Education: Master’s degree in social work or an equivalent degree in Psychology, Sociology, or other relevant Behavioral Science

We work with Latino-focused faith- and community-based organizations to serve and engage the whole family.

Our team works across the United States and Puerto Rico with direct service centers located in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, New York, and Puerto Rico. We also have some programming conducted in Latin America.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This is a twenty-four-hour residential emergency shelter facility and foster care facilities at which minors receive multiple services. Work shifts are subject to change. Noise levels vary from mild to moderate.

Must be able to obtain Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification and First Aid Certification (CPR). Must be able to supervise clients during all forms of transportation via airline and ground travel. Must be able to fly up to two (2) overnight stays per trip, per week. Bending, stooping and lifting up to 40 lbs. may be required to complete daily tasks. The job requires extended periods of sitting and standing (up to 6+ hours).

OTHER

  • All employees must pass a mandatory criminal background check and a bilingual language test for positions that require them.
  • Employment is conditional pending satisfactory results of all required tests and background checks.
  • Periodic physical examinations and TB clearances will be required, if hired.
  • *Some positions governed by Service Contract Act guidelines.
  • It is understood and agreed that, where a position is funded by a third-party grant, pay and other terms and conditions may be determined by the granting agency. To the extent practical and possible. grant-funded employees will normally be given notice of termination effective the date the grant expires. When the application has been made for continued grant funding, the employee will be advised. Extensions of hire may be made in expectation of grant funding but may be rescinded if the granting agency withdraws.
