About Acacia Center for Justice:

The Acacia Center for Justice (“Acacia”) provides legal support and representation to immigrants facing deportation through the development, coordination, and management of national networks of legal services providers serving immigrants across the country. Acacia’s goals are twofold: to support immigrant legal services and defense networks to provide exceptional legal services to immigrants; and to advocate for the expansion of these programs and the infrastructure critical to guaranteeing immigrants access to justice, fairness, and freedom. Acacia ensures accountable, independent, zealous, and person-centered legal services and representation to protect the rights of all immigrants.

Job Summary:

The Senior Finance Associate is a core member of the finance business and planning team. Specifically, they will serve as the main point of contact to the finance departments at subcontractors and vendor partners throughout the US, managing and taking part in negotiations around subcontractor budgets to achieve the overall finance target of the mission, in close partnership with the finance and program team. They will develop excellent working relationships with subcontractors, vendors, and program team members, understand program-specific budget assumptions, liaise with relevant stakeholders for cross-program collaboration, and provide the UCP team with best practices recommendations to enhance efficiency and accuracy and will be able to investigate causes of budget variances. The Senior Finance Associate is a strong communicator, is detail-oriented and deadline-driven, able to navigate a fast-paced working environment.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

Liaise with partners

  • Coordinate negotiations around subcontractor and vendor budgets, in close partnership with the program team.
  • Provide monthly subcontractor and vendor budget performance reports to subcontractors/vendors, assigned program staff, and finance team.
  • Analyze and investigate causes of variance with respective sites in order to identify operational and financial opportunities and communicate findings to finance, data, and program teams.

Financial and contract compliance

  • Support the Director of Business Operations (DBO) in ensuring UCP subcontractors and vendors are in compliance with terms and regulations governing contracts from post-award to closeout; and
  • Support the DBO in subcontractor and vendor contract close-outs and year-end close-outs for Acacia processes.

Financial Reporting

  • Lead the regular monitoring of budget-to-actuals expenses among subcontractors and vendors and report to the DBO.

Finance tools and technical assistance

  • Partner with the DBO in design and preparation of relevant financial invoice and report templates for subcontractors and program team.

Provide support to finance associates

  • Mentor staff by providing guidance and supporting professional development.

Other duties as assigned by the Director of Business Operations.

Required Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Excel and experience with financial software.
  • Strong proficiency in Excel and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Outstanding organizational skills with an eye for detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Familiarity with budgeting and invoicing principles. Preferred:
  • Lived or affiliated experience with the immigration and/or criminal justice systems is a strong plus.
  • Knowledge of the immigration court and detention systems.
  • Additional education or work experience in an administrative, managerial, accounting / finance, or related fields.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

  • Project management or coordination experience.
  • Familiarity with EOIR funded programs and subcontracting.
  • Knowledge or experience with immigration law or related fields.
  • Experience with Smartsheet or similar platforms for invoice management.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, or similar.
  • 4+ year's experience in financial tracking, invoicing, or a similar role.
  • Experience with expense allocations and managing multiple contracts or projects at a time.
  • Experience collecting, organizing, and analyzing large sets of financial data

Compensation and Benefits:

Acacia has established an internal compensation philosophy that centers equity and pay transparency. The salary for this position is set at $96,000. The salary listed is just one component of Acacia’s total compensation package for employees. Supporting Acacia staff—both personally and professionally—is our priority.
